A little about CCB . . .
Cycling Club Breckland was formed in 1975 – it takes its name from the Breckland area of South-west Norfolk – originally an area of light sandy soil, heath and the native Scots Pine, but now much of this area is covered by Thetford Forest.
The club holds activities over a wide area of Norfolk, and has weekly club meetings at Shipdham United Reform Church Hall – between Dereham and Watton, starting about 20:00.
Sunday clubruns leave Dereham Market Place near the War Memorial at 9:00 for a ride of approximately 50 miles at 15-16 mph.
Cycling Club Breckland is not sponsored, but is a sponsor of East Anglian Children's Hospices (EACH). The very popular 'Ride for Life' organised with Eastern Counties Newspapers, for EACH, is based at Santon Downham in the heart of the Thetford Forest. Cycling Club Breckland is indeed lucky to be situated surrounded by so much excellent cycling country.
A full calendar of time trials is promoted. And even for the less talented the cakes are always of the highest order. In this field of sporting cycling the club has achieved considerable success, holding at various times a number of National Championships and Records. |

Shaftesbury CC 10 10/05/2008
It was a warm and humid afternoon on the E2 at Six Mile Bottom. 2 members of CC Breckland were looking for fast times. Keith Grasby recorded 23:09, only 13 seconds outside his best from the LTS. Phil Nudds set a rapid time of 21:16 to take 13 seconds off his lifetime best. To put everything into perspective Michael Hutchinson scorched round in 18:26. That is over 32.5mph.

Aubrey De'ath
I have received the sad news that Aubrey, well known for his able propulsion of competitors at the start of Breckland events, passed away on Thursday 8th May. Our sympathies go out to Sylvia and Bobby.

Albert Saunders - June 19th 1920 - 28th April 2008
A familiar figure at local cycling events for more years than most people can remember Albert Saunders, founder member of Cycling Club Breckland, died on Monday 28th April after a long illness aged 87. One of the first things he did after leaving school, aged 14, to start work in engineering was to save up to buy a bike which he assembled himself. A staunch trade unionist all his life he acted as a union representative on several committees dealing with Youth and Probation issues while living in Finchley, North London, where he was born. In the early years of the Second World War, when he was working in a reserved occupation as engineer, he met his future wife Margaret and they enjoyed many years of cycle touring and Youth Hostelling. After marriage in 1947 they had three children, Don, Janet, who sadly died in 2002 and Ann who were taken on camping trips using a sidecar, a cycling trailer and later a tandem and triplet.
Moving to Norfolk at the end of 1959 to run a smallholding at Rockland All Saints cycling took a backseat until, through Ann, they joined the Thetford Cycling Club in 1966 and were soon involved with Janet taking over as secretary, Don and Ann racing and Albert timekeeping, a job which was to keep him occupied from then on, while brother Eric completed the family connection. In 1973 Albert, Margaret and Don joined the West Suffolk Wheelers for a short period until Albert, urged by a number of youngsters, set about founding Cycling Club Breckland in 1975, taking its name from the newly formed Breckland District Council.
Starting work at Metamec Clocks of Dereham in the early 60’s Albert combined his increasing workload in the cycling sphere with his union work which resulted in him becoming convener of the Managerial and Technical Staff Association of the G.M.B. union and earning a certificate for meritorious service in 1984. At the same time the growth of his club’s annual list of open and club events took up more and more of his time Albert still found time to accept chairmanship of the East District of the Road Time trials Council and working with and for the East Anglian Veteran Time Trial Association and the East Region Tricycle Association. Perhaps best known for organising his club’s annual 50km event for teams of four riders which included two National Championship versions Albert was honoured with life membership by his club and the East Anglian Veteran Time Trial Association and a highlight for him the gold medal for service to the sport by the Road Time Trials Council. Made redundant in 1983 and with time on his hands Albert turned to village life in Carbrooke, having moved there in 1971, helping with the youth club in the school, taking cycling proficiency lessons with the children with help from club members and serving on the village hall committee as treasurer and chairing the carpet bowls club.
Very much a family man Albert was immensely proud of his two daughters, Janet a much loved and respected Head Teacher in Essex before her untimely death and Ann whose work in what many would think rather unsavoury subjects, sewerage and water disposal, taking her all over the country and abroad.
It was however son Don’s achievements both as a competitor and administrator in time trialling that gave him the most pleasure followed closely by his granddaughter Heidi who won the GHS National School Girl Championship over ten miles in 1989 and his other four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two of whom already show signs of following in the family tradition. Emily, who rode her first event over 5 miles on her 12th birthday last year and Declan aged 10 who has ridden in several club events on the tandem steered by grandfather Don – a fitting tribute to a man whose life was devoted to the sport he loved.
Albert's funeral will be held at Earlham Crematorium in Norwich at 11:15 14th May 2008. Family Flowers only and no mourning please. Donations, if desired, to East Anglia's Childrens' Hospices or Shipdham Surgery. c/o Co-operative Funeral Services, Watton, Thetford, IP25 6AH.
