  A little about CCB . . .

Cycling Club Breckland was formed in 1975 – it takes its name from the Breckland area of South-west Norfolk – originally an area of light sandy soil, heath and the native Scots Pine, but now much of this area is covered by Thetford Forest.

The club holds activities over a wide area of Norfolk, and has weekly club meetings at Shipdham United Reform Church Hall – between Dereham and Watton, starting about 20:00.

Sunday clubruns leave Dereham Market Place near the War Memorial at 9:00 for a ride of approximately 50 miles at 15-16 mph.

Cycling Club Breckland is not sponsored, but is a sponsor of East Anglian Children's Hospices (EACH). The very popular 'Ride for Life' organised with Eastern Counties Newspapers, for EACH, is based at Santon Downham in the heart of the Thetford Forest. Cycling Club Breckland is indeed lucky to be situated surrounded by so much excellent cycling country.

A full calendar of time trials is promoted. And even for the less talented the cakes are always of the highest order. In this field of sporting cycling the club has achieved considerable success, holding at various times a number of National Championships and Records.

Open Events Thetford MTB Marin Dusk to Dawn - An experience!

Three o'clock on Saturday afternoon with the threat of a damp night hanging over May Day Meadow.
Paul, Adam and young James Cross met me to establsh base camp!
Working together we soon got the marquee up, the team "Saham Hills Mountain Rescue" registered and the frame numbers affixed.
Debbie rolled up to administer refreshment, followed by fourth member Darren, a policeman from Swaffham with some daylight experience of mountian bike races.
The clock ticked around to 6:30 and the pre-race briefing. Final preparations completed and Darren lined up with the 500 or so others for the first lap. We had a team of four, but there were also teams of three, two and the brave solo riders. All set on completing as many 12 mile laps between 8pm and 8am.
By 8 o'clock the drizzle was making it's presence known but the quad bike rolled off with the phalanx in pursuit. Just over an hour late Darren handed the light-stick over to Adam who disappeared into the dark.
About 10:30 Martin rode off into the fray. Tom's Pit had been closed for the first two laps so I had a fairly fresh surface to ride on. Nevertheless I toppled over climbing out, running out to remount. back on the course already trampled the going was becoming greasy and as much energy was being spent keeping on course as going forward.
Back through the Arena to begin the second half of the circuit and feeling my strength beginning to ebb away. I followed the course parrallel to the B1108 before the U turn to head back again. Through a pit, where I teetered on the edge, put my foot down and scooted to safety. Weaving through the trees and then a switch-back where I successfully rode the first, second and then on the third stalled on the brink.
I put my foot down to scoot again, but must have put it down awkwardly as my thigh was shot with agonising pains and I slid on my bum back to the bottom of the pit to lie in the bracken. I tried to rise but my leg would not take any weight.
Riders came through and several promised to advise a marshall.
Meanwhile I imagined I might be lying there till the morning, lost in the woods. After some working I managed to get my leg able to take a small amount of weight if the rest was supported by the bike. I then had to scramble out of the pit and carry on along the course.
Every time riders came along I ducked into the side with the bracken and nettles. Then I still had the odd pit to navigate with one good leg. Eventually I found a marshalling point and they radioed for a quad to pick me up and carry me back for summary treatment by a Norwich City College massuer. Walking was still painful so I was out of further punishment on the course.
Paul voted out when he completed the lap after mine so Darren and Adam were left to do the work. They heroically stacked in three more laps, by which time the course was deep in mud all round and riders were pulling out all over the place. By 6:30 we called it a night and tried to recover enough to strike camp and get home.

Mark Cozens has photos taken in the event on his website - see Links. They were taken early on so folks are relatively clean.

I am still trying to get results from the Norwich ABC 10 on Saturday, the 25 on Sunday was cancelled due to the rain that continued up until lunchtime.

Open Events Dusk to Dawn Mountain Bike race - 4/5th October 2008

Under the guise of the "Saham Hills Mountain Rescue Team" three members and a guest are "competing" next weekend in this event. Starting at 8pm at May Day Farm in Thetford Forest the team has to complete as many 12 mile circuits as we can during the 12 hours before 8am on Sunday.
If you feel like a different night out then we would be grateful for encouragement/ abuse to help us round. Paul and Martin are old and foolish, Adam is young and keen and I have yet to meet Darren. Further details can be found on the D2D website www.thetfordmtbracing.com/

  Cragg Vale Hill Climb

If anyone is interested in a 5.5 mil hill climb in Yorkshire which would be good training for our own with the added bonus of a bottle of beer.

The next Yorkshire Velo promotion is the Cragg Vale Hill Climb on 19 October 2008 at 2pm.

Wim Van Der Speck of www.littlevalleybrewery.co.uk has again agreed to sponsor the event by donating a bottle of beer to every senior starter (and to the parent/guardian of any juniors).

As well as the usual prize categories, there will also be running a (voluntary!) weight handicap to give the larger boned testers amongst us a chance of glory. The formula will be 'tweaked' from last year, to ensure that Mr Saint does not make the top three again!

Further details attached or available from Martin on application.
Please make cheques payable to Denise Shackleton

Club Events 2009

Margaret and Ted Doe, and Peter and Kath Tozer are taking a well deserved retirement from their duties over the years organising the Club Events.
We wish to express our thanks for the hours that they have put in.
As a result, all events bar the B10/3 one will be based on Scoulton Village Hall unless volunteers present themselves to act as Timekeepers or to put out signs on our other courses.
Once again, members of other clubs are required to have ridden at least one club event during the year on another course prior to riding the B10/3. Volunteers will be needed to assist Heather with this event as several crazy club members will still have another day's pedalling in the LEL audax.

Entry fee for 2009 will be £2.00 with the exception of the Post-Prandial Hill Climb which is Free
